
Volleyball Falls at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball fell in three sets (25-19, 25-19, 25-18) Sunday afternoon at Michigan inside the Crisler Center.Â
MSU drops to 18-8 overall and 8-8 in the Big Ten with the loss, while UM moves to 19-8 and 9-7.Â
Junior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska led MSU in kills with 13, her 15th match of the season with double-digit kills, and hit .296 for the match. Freshman outside hitter Bianca Mumcular added eight kills. Â
Junior setter Cam Berger tallied a team-high nine digs and added 10 assists, while redshirt freshman setter Malayah Long posted a team-high 14 assists. Junior middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig recorded a team-best two blocks.Â
After a back-and-forth start to the first set, UM took a two-point lead at 8-6 before a Wolverine attack error and Kulig solo block tied the set again at 8-8. The Spartans tied the set three more times in the following points until a Staniszewksa kill and UM attack error gave MSU a one-point lead at 12-11. A 4-1 run by the Wolverines to follow helped UM to a two-point, 15-13 lead at the media timeout. UM fired off two more points out of the timeout to extend its lead to 17-13 and forced an MSU timeout after another 2-0 run at 19-14. The Wolverines extended their lead to six with a kill out of the timeout, but MSU followed with a 5-2 run with kills from Mumcular, Evie Doezema and Staniszewska and a pair of UM errors to get within three at 22-19. The Wolverines closed the set with three-straight points to take the first, 25-19.Â
Back-to-back Mumcular kills tied the second set at 6-6 before a pair of Spartan errors gave UM a two-point lead, but a Wolverine service error and third kill from Mumcular tied the set again at 8-8. UM responded with a kill to take back a one-point edge before another Mumcular kill tied the set again at 9-9. MSU took a one-point lead with back-to-back Staniszewksa kills at 13-12, but the Wolverines used a 3-0 run to take back the advantage at 15-13 at the media timeout. Three UM errors out of the timeout got the Spartans within one at 17-16 before a UM block and kill forced an MSU timeout at 19-16. A 3-1 Spartan run with a Taylah Holdem kill, UM service error and rare libero kill from Lia Schneider closed the gap to a point again at 20-19 before back-to-back UM points forced an MSU timeout at 22-19. Two Wolverine kills out of the timeout got UM to set point at 24-19 before a Spartan attack error ended the set, 25-19, to give UM a 2-0 advantage.Â
MSU called a timeout after UM got out to an 8-2 lead in the third set. The Spartans responded with a Doezema kill, Berger ace and back-to-back Staniszewska kills for a 4-0 run to get within a pair at 8-6. The Wolverines followed with two points of their own to extend their lead back to four at 10-6, but a UM service error, Staniszewska service ace and Wolverine attack error got MSU back within a point at 10-9 before the Wolverines used a 7-2 run to take a six-point lead and force an MSU timeout at 17-11. UM extended its lead to eight with a 4-2 run out of the timeout at 21-13, but a 3-1 MSU run with a UM service error, block from Formankova and Kulig and Staniszewska kill forced a Wolverine timeout at 22-16. A Formankova kill and service ace from Mya Bolton got the Spartans back within five at 23-18 out of the timeout, but UM followed with back-to-back points to end the set and match, 25-18.Â
