EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State got a game-tying goal from freshman Porter Martone with just 39.8 seconds left in regulation but fell in overtime to No. 7/8-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday night by a final score of 2-1 from Ron Mason Rink at Munn Ice Arena. It was Martone's third goal and fourth point of the weekend as he contributed on four of MSU's five total goals in the series.
"That was a tough weekend for us for sure," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "Credit to Wisconsin - I think they're the best team we played this year. They make it hard on you. You have got to be willing to play real hockey. I thought we did a better job of that tonight than we did yesterday. Proud of the guys, they stayed with it, easy game to get frustrated with, we had some opportunities. And I thought both goalies were really good. To stay with it, to tie it up with 20 seconds there, I think that says a lot about our group and what we want to be as a program."
The Spartans move to 9-3-0 on the season and 4-2-0 in Big Ten action. MSU gets one point towards the conference standings for the tie in regulation, improving to 12 points through six conference games played.
Michigan State out-shot Wisconsin 33-28 overall including a 14-7 margin in the first period. Both sides scored on the power play with MSU going 1-for-2 and the Badgers going 1-for-5 as Michigan State successfully killed four Wisconsin power plays, which included three in the third period. The Spartan were strong on the dot winning .577 percent of their face-off opportunities led by senior Charlie Stramel's 20 face-off wins. Sophomore Nathan Mackie went 10-2 on the draw, winning .833 percent of his face-offs.
Junior goaltender Trey Augustine was strong in goal making 26 saves, which included 12 in the third period alone and five on third period power plays to keep his team within a one goal deficit.
How It Happened
Michigan State controlled play late in the first period, out-shooting the Badgers 14-7 in the stanza overall. Junior Tommi Mannisto had the best chance of the period for the Spartans with a 1-on-1 breakaway at the 14:36 mark that was saved. Augustine came up big for MSU several times, including making a stop on a Badger breakaway 8:34 into the period.
Wisconsin opened the scoring 10:06 into the second period on a power play, taking a 1-0 lead over the Spartans mid-way through. A potential game-tying shot off the stick of senior Tiernan Shoudy hit the pipe late in the period with under three minutes to play.
Martone nearly connected with Stramel for the game-tying goal just 28 seconds into the third period, but it was saved by the Wisconsin goaltender. Michigan State successfully killed three Badger power plays in the period to stay within a one goal deficit late. A delay of game penalty called on Wisconsin with 1:03 to play after a Badgers skater covered the puck in the crease allowed momentum to swing towards MSU. With 39.8 seconds remaining in regulation, Stramel found Martone at the net front where he deposited the game-tying goal.
Freshman Ryker Lee had a one-on-one breakaway scoring chance with 2:37 to play in overtime but had his shot stopped by the Badgers. Wisconsin won the ensuing face-off, streaking the length of the ice to score the game-winning goal.
