11/27/2025 12:15:00 AM | Men's Ice Hockey
EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 3/3-ranked Michigan State hockey got itself back into the win column on Wednesday night taking down Colgate, 5-2, in non-conference action from Ron Mason Rink at Munn Ice Arena.
"I liked our start," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "I thought we got to our game right off the bat, executed at a high level. I talked to the guys, and we asked them to be better at some areas, and I thought we were for sure."
The Spartans improve to 10-3-0 on the season while Colgate falls to 5-8-2 overall. Game two of the series is set for Friday, November 28 at 4:00 p.m.
Michigan State out-shot Colgate 42-31 overall in game one, which included a 14-6 margin in the third period. MSU was 3-for-3 on the penalty kill stopping all six of Colgate's power play shots. At the dot, Michigan State won .549 percent of its face-offs led by a 13-9 performance from senior Charlie Stramel.
Five Spartans tallied multi-point performance on Wednesday night including freshman Ryker Lee, sophomore Owen West, sophomore Shane Vansaghi, freshman Anthony Romani and sophomore Colin Ralph. Lee and West each scored first period goals before assisting on one goal each later in the contest. Vansaghi, Romani and Ralph each posted a pair of assists.
Also scoring for MSU on Wednesday were freshman Eric Nilson, senior Tiernan Shoudy and Stramel. Michigan State got single assists from juniors Maxim Strbak and Tommi Mannisto.
Freshman goaltender Melvin Strahl made his second career start between the pipes for MSU making 29 saves to improve to 2-0-0 in goal.
"I thought he did a good job," Nightingale said. "He's been really good in practice, and he's been competitive. Him and Trey (Augustine) and Dolan (Gilbert) have a good relationship. Our goal is to push each other, and I thought he made some critical saves for us. I think he went through some stretches there where he didn't see a ton, but then all of a sudden, he had some good chances and was ready to make some saves."
How It Happened
West opened the scoring just under four minutes into the period with a one-timer from the blueline that blew past the Colgate goaltender for his first career goal. Less than a minute later, Lee found the back door wide open off a feed from Vansaghi to make it 2-0 Spartans in under five minutes of action. Vansaghi collected his second assist of the period when he found Nilson waiting on the back doorstep at the 7:15 mark. Colgate got on the board just past the mid-way point of the first, sending a puck into the upper right corner of the goal to beat Strahl on a rush.
The Spartans killed a pair of Raider penalties in the second period, while thwarting a Colgate breakaway chance to keep them scoreless in the frame. Colgate's Ryan Sullivan was 1-on-1 with Strahl late in the period, with the freshman netminder stonewalling the shot attempt. Tiernan Shoudy added an insurance goal for MSU late in the stanza, deflecting a shot sent in by Mannisto.
Stramel extended Michigan State's lead to 5-1 late in the third period, scoring from the high slot at the 14:19 mark after a pass by Romani. Colgate responded just seconds later however, notching their second goal of the evening at 14:41.
