Spartans Bounce Back in Win over Ohio

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Michigan State field hockey bounced back to defeat Ohio, 5-0, on Saturday at Trager Stadium.
A win evens Michigan State's season record at 1-1 in advance of the team's home opener against Bellarmine at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 5 at Ralph Young Field.
It's the first shutout of the season for the Spartans and the first for MSU since a 5-0 win over Colgate last season. Michigan State goalkeepers combined for five saves in the contest led by sophomore Ashley Herbert's three.
MSU out-shot the Bobcats 19-to-13 overall and 13-to-5 in shots on goal. Senior Gracie Burns led all players with three shots on goal while graduates Tatum Johnson and Maddie Lawlor had two apiece. Five different Spartans found the back of the goal, with junior Bianca Pizano, junior Katelyn Dulin, sophomore Mora Cavazza, freshman Sarah Connolly and Burns each scoring. Johnson tallied a pair of assists for the Spartans.
For Dulin, Cavazza and Connolly, Saturday's goals represented each of their career firsts.
Michigan State got the scoring started early and often as MSU put three goals past the Bobcat goaltender in the first period. Cavazza beat the goalie 1-on-1 in the fourth minute of action for her first goal of the season the Spartans scored twice more in the span of a minute when Dulin and Pizano collected goals in the 13th and 14th minutes off rebounded shots previously saved by the Ohio netminder.
At halftime, the Spartans took a 4-0 lead into the locker room following a Burns goal in the 27th minute off the first of two consecutive assists from Johnson.
MSU was cruising out of halftime when Connolly notched a goal off an assist from Johnson in the 37th minute of action, tipping in a goal following one of Michigan State's 11 penalty corners of the morning. The Spartans took 11 corners to just five for Ohio.
