ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 2/2-ranked Michigan State fell to No. 1/1-ranked Michigan in overtime on Friday night, 4-3, from Yost Ice Arena. The Spartans come away with one point towards the Big Ten standings heading into Saturday night's 'Duel in the D' at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
"Tough finish," said Michigan State head coach Adam Nightingale. "I thought it was a great hockey game. Both teams played well and both goalies were really good. I liked us in the first two periods. Tough pill to swallow but now it's about regrouping and being ready for tomorrow."
MSU moves to 21-6-0 and 12-5 in the Big Ten but still picks up a point towards the conference standings to remain within striking distance of the top spot with 36 points. Michigan improves to 23-4-0 and 14-3 in B1G action while earning the extra point for an overtime victory.
Senior forward Charlie Stramel continued his stellar season on the top line with a goal and an assist on Friday. Sophomore forward Shane Vansaghi and sophomore defenseman Owen West also added goals for the Spartans. Senior forward Daniel Russell contributed a pair of assists, while freshmen forwards Porter Martone and Ryker Lee each had one. Junior goaltender Trey Augustine made 31 saves in goal.
Shots on goal were nearly even with the Wolverines holding a slight 35-34 edge. MSU blocked 21 shots to 17 for Michigan, but Michigan was strong from the face-off dot winning 45 draws to 30 for the Spartans.
How It Happened
Both sides scored late in the first period to take a 1-1 tie into the first intermission of the night. Stramel opened the scoring for MSU at the 15:14 mark after Martone sent a puck into the painted area and Stramel was there to clean it up. The Wolverines evened the score not two minutes later off a deflection.
Great goaltending by Augustine kept Michigan off the scoreboard in the second period, while the Spartans added two goals to take a 3-1 lead. With just under five minutes to play in the second, Vansaghi overpowered a Michigan defenseman a beat the Wolverine goaltender high glove to make it 2-1, MSU. Just two minutes later a Russell shot rebounded out to Stramel, who found West waiting in the slot to deposit a bullet of a shot into the back of the net.
Michigan scored twice in the third period to even the score at 3-3 and force the game into overtime. The Wolverines scored shorthanded at the 12:52 mark after a Martone shot ricocheted off the inside iron of the right post but didn't cross the goal line.
A Spartan penalty in overtime provided Michigan a 4-on-3 advantage less than two minutes into the extra period. MSU nearly killed off the man advantage, but the Wolverines scored on a puck that trickled past Augustine's pad with 1:50 remaining to earn the extra point.
