Bloomington, Ind. - Michigan State defeated Indiana 15-5, 15-9, 15-12 in Bloomington on Friday, Oct. 27 to complete the season sweep over IU. The Spartans are now 13-7 overall, 6-5 in the Big Ten while Indiana falls to 12-9 overall and 3-8 in the conference.
The Spartans hit .319 as a team while IU hit just .185. Maren Witzel and Jenny Rood led MSU with 12 kills. Witzel hit .579 for the match to go with four digs and three blocks. Rood added 10 kills for her third double-double of the season. Amy Sibbernsen also tallied a double-double with 1 kills and 11 digs while Lisa Ashton notched a career-high 15 digs.
At 2-2 in game one, an IU hitting error gave Michigan State its first lead which it never relinquished. At 8-4 Indiana took a timeout, after which State all but sealed the game with five straight points and went on to a 15-5 victory. Rood led the Spartans with seven kills while Witzel added four kills on .800 hitting. MSU hit .368 as a team.
The Spartans found themselves down 0-3 to start game two before siding out and serving four straight, led by a Maren Witzel block solo and kill, to go up 4-3. Indiana tied the score at four but then Hartley toed the service line and served the Spartans to eight straight points to open a 12-4 lead. The Hoosiers did not go quietly though, climbing to within five at 14-9 before a Hartley kill sided MSU out for the last time and Sibbernsen scored a kill for a 15-9 win. Michigan State hit .444 for the game. Erin Hartley had six kills in the game to lead the Green and White.
Down 6-10 in game three, the teams traded seven sideouts before Angela Morley hit the service rotation. Two of the next three Spartan points were Morley aces to spark MSU to a 14-10 lead. The Hoosiers responded with two points to climb within two before a Spartan timeout calmed the team and a Morley kill gave State the sideout and an Indiana hitting error the game and match, 15-12.
The Spartans travel to Penn State for a 7 p.m. meeting on Oct. 28.
