Volleyball Falls At Purdue, 3-1

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Kim Schram had 24 kills and Maggied Griffin added 66 assists as Michigan State volleyball fell at Purdue, 3-1 (22-30, 31-29, 30-32, 20-30), in West Lafayette, Ind., Friday. State's record moves to 9-12 on the year and 4-9 in Big Ten play, while Purdue is now 12-11 overall, 5-8 in league matches.
Brooke Langston and Meghan Schoen each posted 13 kills for the Spartans, Langston's coming on .500 hitting. Katie Johnson was the fourth Spartan in double figure kills, with 10. Libero Marley Bellwood had her fifth consecutive match with 15 or more digs, as she had a match-high 20 on the night. Diana Steplyk and Schram each added 10 digs and Michelle Kopka had 15. Schoen had four blocks for State. The Spartans hit .216 (71K-30E-190TA) on the night, while Purdue posted a .277 (77K-24E-191TA) attack percentage in the match.
The first game was close throughout the first half, though Purdue went on to pull out to a 20-14 lead. The Spartans fought back to within three at 25-22, but were unable to put another point on the board in the first game, and lost, 30-22. Schram led MSU with seven kills on .429 hitting (7K-1E-14TA), while Schoen had four kills. Griffin posted 17 assists in the game, and Bellwood had five digs. State hit .238 (18K-8E-42TA), while Purdue hit .400 (19K-3E-40TA) in the game.
The second game saw State pull out to a 13-7 lead, thanks in large part to a five-point service run from Diana Steplyk. The Spartans led by as much as 20-12 before Purdue fought back to within three at 20-17. The Boilermakers cut the MSU lead to two, 27-25, before State rallied to game point, 29-25. Purdue came back to tie the game at 29 on a three-point service run from Leah Wischmeier, and State took the game, 31-29, thanks to a kill from Kopka and a block assist by Johnson and Schoen. Schram again led State with six kills, while Griffin had 17 more assists. Schoen had two kills, two service aces and two block assists in the game, while Langston added four kills. MSU hit .229 in the game (17K-6E-48TA) and held the Boilermakers to a .186 attack percentage (20K-9E-59TA).
Purdue controlled most of the third game of the set, though State fought to make it a close contest late and tied the game at 27, 28 and 29. State took its first lead at 30-29, but a service error from Griffin tied the game again at 30. Purdue took the 2-1 lead in the match with a 32-30 win. Schram had nine kills for State, to go along with five digs. Griffin had 23 assists, while Bellwood and Steplyk had five and six digs, respectively. Schoen had four kills, while Johnson added five. The Spartans hit .226 (24K-10E-62TA) in the game to Purdue's .224 (19K-6E-58TA).
The teams battled early in the fourth game, with neither squad leading by more than three points until Purdue took a 15-11 lead. The Spartans struggled as Purdue rolled to a 25-14 lead, due in large part to a six-point service run from PU's Wischmeier. Purdue won the match on a 30-20 win. Schram had three kills for State in the final game, while Mickey Davis posted the Spartans' lone service ace of the game. State hit .158 with 12 kills in the final game, while Purdue had a .382 attack percentage.
The Spartans face Indiana (8-15, 2-10 Big Ten) Saturday at 7 p.m. in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosiers hosted Michigan in a Friday match.
