EAST LANSING, Mich. - Wrestling with a shorthanded lineup, No. 22 Michigan State won four matches, but it wasn't enough to overtake No. 18 Indiana as the Hoosiers came away with a 23-15 victory Friday night at Jenison Field House. Nick Simmons, ranked No. 2 in the nation at 133 pounds, wrestled at 141 pounds for the first time in his career due to an injury that forced Andy Simmons out of the lineup. Nick won his match by disqualification, as Indiana's Scott Kelly was called for stalling five times, giving MSU six team points. Nick Palmieri, at 197 pounds, opened the evening with his first career dual-match win, scoring a 3-2 decision over Nate Everhart. John Murphy (174) and 10th-ranked Joe Williams (184) won the last two matches of the dual for the Spartans (3-9, 2-5 Big Ten).
"It's a difficult situation," Minkel said of the lineup change, "and Indiana is a very good team. We're not at full strength right now, so we had to move some guys around. We knew it was going to be a tall order coming into the dual. But there were still some great matches tonight."
Palmieri's first dual win came in dramatic fashion, as he scored a takedown with only eight seconds remaining in the match to rally for the 3-2 victory. After no scoring in the first two periods, Everhart got on the board first with an escape 10 seconds into the final period. Everhart went up 2-0 as Palmieri was called for stalling, but Palmieri got the point back with 20 seconds left as Everhart was also called for stalling. Needing a takedown for the win, Palmieri delivered with eight seconds left.
"I'm probably most happy for Nick Palmieri," Minkel said. "He's had some tough opponents and some tough matches. He's a resilient kid who's worked hard, and he came out with a big win."
MSU's lead was shortlived, as Josh Buuck recorded a major decision over Alan O'Donnell at heavyweight, 13-3, giving the Hoosiers (13-4, 4-3) a 4-3 edge.
The 125-pound bout featured a thrilling matchup of top-10 wrestlers, but unfortunately for MSU, seventh-ranked Franklin Gomez came out on the losing end for the third straight dual, this time to No. 9 Angel Escobedo. Gomez closed the first period with a last-second takedown to go up 2-0. Thirty seconds into the second period, he pulled a reversal, but Escobedo returned the favor 40 seconds later. Gomez eventually escaped and entered the third period with a 5-2 lead. In a fast-paced third period, Escobedo opened with a reversal at the 1:10 mark, and secured near-fall points to take a 6-5 lead with a minute left. Gomez countered with a reversal with 45 seconds left to reclaim the lead at 7-6, but with less than 10 seconds remaining, Escobedo reversed Gomez for the third time of the match and then tacked on near-fall points in a stunning turnaround. Escobedo walked away with an 11-7 victory, his 29th of the season.
With Andy Simmons hurt, Nick was called on to wrestle at 141 pounds, placing Clint Frutiger in the 133-pound slot for the first start of his career. No. 20 Andrae Hernandez recorded a 16-1 technical fall over Frutiger in the third period, putting Indiana up 12-3.
At 141, Simmons quickly went up 2-0 over Kelly with a takedown 40 seconds into the first period. With Simmons on top, Kelly was then called for stalling three times in the period, giving Nick a 4-0 advantage. It was more of the same in the second, as Kelly was called for stalling two more times, totalling five for the match, which is an automatic disqualification. Simmons was credited with his 31st victory of the year, and the disqualification gave MSU six team points heading into the break.
After the break, Tim Hammer took 19th-ranked Matt Coughlin down to the wire at 149 pounds, but gave up a takedown with just 26 seconds left in the match to fall, 3-1.
Indiana went up 19-9 as No. 7 Brandon Becker scored a major decision over Tony Greathouse at 157, 10-1. In the 165-pound match, Max Dean recorded another major decision for IU, coming up with a 9-1 victory against Rocky Cozart. MSU was deducted one point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the match, putting Indiana's lead at 23-8.
The Spartans closed the dual with two straight victories. John Murphy won for the third time in his last four starts at 174 with a strong 8-4 performance over Trevor Perry. Murphy led 3-2 after the first, and recorded near-fall points to open the second. He tacked on two more escape points and riding time in the win.
"John Murphy got after it hard tonight," said Minkel. "He's wrestling really well right now. He's made tremendous progress this year."
At 184, No. 10 Joe Williams dominated Nick Avery, 18-6. Williams recorded eight takedowns in the match, including six in the third period, to earn his second major decision of the season. Williams is now 24-9 for the season.
Michigan State returns to action Sunday, Feb. 18 to take on No. 11 Penn State at 1 p.m. in Jenison Field House.
