Spartans Battle but Fall to Badgers

East Lansing Mich. -- Michigan State dropped a second straight match on Friday, falling to No. 6 Wisconsin, 3-0 (19-25, 16-25, 21-25). The Spartans fall to 13-6 and 4-5 in Conference play with the loss, and the league-leading Badgers improve to 13-4, 9-0 in B1G action.
MSU played tight to their guests in both the first and third frames, but the Badgers were able to pull out six- and four-point victories in those sets sandwiched around a 25-16 win in the second frame. Wisconsin hit .303 on the evening, holding MSU to .151 with its best set the third, where MSU had 15 kills and hit .324. Both teams had five blocks, but the Badgers made big headway at the service line with eight aces compared to just two for MSU.
The Spartans got 11 kills from Meredith Norris to go with six digs, while Biamba Kabengele added eight kills, hit a match-best .429, and provided four digs and a solo block. Freshman Emma Monks had a hand on four of MSU's five blocks on the night to share the match lead, and added three kills.
Molly Haggerty had 14 kills and four digs for the Badgers, while Grace Loberg added 12 kills and a pair of stuffs. Setter Sidney Hilley had a double-double with 31 kills and 12 digs.
The Spartans wrap up a four-match homestand on Sunday when they host No. 7 Minnesota.

SET SYNOPSIS
- SET ONE: Michigan State rolled out some lineup changes, starting freshmen Emma Monks and Biamba Kabengele and managed to roll out to a two-point edge at 7-5, putting down five kills on seven swings without an error, (.715), The teams traded points until Wisconsin used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 14-11, and MSU called time out. The Spartans came out of the break with the first block of the match by either team, as Monks and Norris put up the wall for Alexis Hart and cut the deficit to two, and used a 5-1 run to take the lead back at 16-15. With the teams tied at 18's, Wisconsin kicked off a 3-0 run that allowed the Badgers to win the race to 20 and hold their largest lead. An MSU error and kill by Haggerty out of the break pushed Wisconsin to five points (23-18), and the visitors closed out the set on a 7-1 run to take a 1-0 match lead. Kabengele had five kills and no errors in the first , while Monks had her hands on both MSU blocks. Molly Haggerty had six kills for the visitors, who hit .344 to MSU's .128.
- SET TWO: Wisconsin used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 9-6 in the second set, and held the three-point edge to 12-9, and MSU called time out. Back-to-back blocks followed by an MSU error and a Haggerty ace allowed the Badgers to run away a bit and push their lead out to seven, 16-9. MSU put up a kill from Norris and a block by Johnson and Monks to trim it down to 16-11, and a service ace by Cox pulled MSU within four, 18-14. The visitors responded with a 3-0 run to make it a seven-point edge, and MSU called time out to regroup. Wisconsin got to set point with its largest lead of the night at 24-16, and closed it out on a Danielle Hart termination to take a 2-0 match lead. Norris had four of MSU's eight kills in the set, adding two digs. Molly Johnson came off the bench to add two kills and a block. For the visitors, both Loberg and Haggerty had five kills, and Hart added three.
- SET THREE: The visitors opened up a 6-1 lead in the third set, but fought back into it with a pair of kills from Norris and one from Monks to cut it to 6-4, then to 8-7 after a Johnson kill. Wisconsin scored four of the next six to pull ahead 12-9, and took its largest lead at five, 14-9. MSU hung in, trimming it to 16-13 as Norris tried to swing the Spartans back ahead, and MSU was hitting its match-best .286 (10-4-22) as it stayed within reach at 17-14. With the visitors leading 19-15, Kabengele went of the block to trim it back to three, and Norris ended a long rally with a cross-court shot to pull MSU to within a pair at 19-17. The teams traded points, with the Wisconsin lead fluctuating between two and three points before Sydney Hilley made it a four-point edge at 23-19. A service error by MSU gave the Badgers match point, and despite Kabengele fending off the end of the frame, Hilley closed it out for her team for the 3-0 victory. Norris had five of her 11 kills in the final frame, with the freshman Kabengele posting three. MSU hit a match-best .324 in the final set, holding Wisconsin to .281, but could not force a fourth set.
