UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania – Alex Limoges' goal 30 seconds into overtime gave Penn State a 3-2 win over the Michigan State hockey team on Friday at Pegula Ice Arena. Josh Nodler and Mitchell Lewandowski scored for the Spartans.
MSU (5-6-2, 4-6-1-2-1-0) scored 15 seconds into the third period to take a 2-1 lead, but on a power play and with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, Penn State tied the game with 1:10 to go.
In overtime, Limoges was able to tip in a cross-ice pass from the low slot to give Penn State (6-7, 4-7-0-1-0-0) the win.
"As the game went on, I thought we got better as groups of five and the game evened up," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "I thought we played a really good third period. It was unfortunate to take a penalty late like that, it puts us in a bad spot. We darn near had the whole thing killed off – we needed one bounce and didn't get it. Then, anything can happen in overtime.
"Tough one, but we got a point and we have a chance tomorrow to make something good happen and have a real good weekend. That's what our job will be tomorrow."
Penn State took a 1-0 lead 7:01 into the first on a goal by Christian Sarlo. Penn State forced a turnover just inside the Spartan blue line and seconds later, Tim Doherty was able to set up Sarlo just off the right post to make it 1-0.
MSU evened the game 4:01 into the second period as Nodler got his second in as many games. Nodler was able to take advantage of a mishandled puck inside the PSU blueline and skate in along the outside of the left circle. Nodler cut toward the net, made a move and slipped the puck into the net on the short side for an unassisted goal.
The Spartans won the opening faceoff to start the third period and 15 seconds later, made it 2-1. Charlie Combs dumped the puck into the left corner where Lewandowski was able to steal it from a PSU defender and throw it toward the net from behind the goal line. The puck went off the skate of a defenseman and over goaltender Oskar Autio's shoulder.
In the final minutes of the third period following a Spartan power play, a penalty to MSU gave Penn State a man-advantage. The Spartans were 14 seconds away from killing the penalty when Connor MacEachern got open going through the low slot and slid a pass from Limoges into the net with 1:10 on the clock to make it 2-2.
MSU outshot Penn State 10-5 in the third period. For the game, PSU held a 39-28 edge.
MSU goaltender Drew DeRidder made several outstanding saves, including robbing Doherty on a breakaway prior to the midway point of the third period to keep it a 2-1 game.
The Spartans and Nittany Lions will complete their season series on Saturday at 3 p.m.
