Spartans Show Resilience In Loss at #12 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Michigan State took a set off of No. 12-ranked Penn State on Sunday, but ultimately fell to the Nittany Lions, 3-1 (17-25, 25-22, 22-25,16-25) at Rec Hall.
Sophomore Aliyah Moore led the Spartans in kills (15) as Michigan State fell to 10-5 overall and 1-3 in Big Ten action this season. Moore hit .364 on 33 attempts for MSU. Junior Nalani Iosia led all players with 17 digs on the day in another impressive performance for the Texas transfer. Sophomore Julia Bishop led the team with 30 assists while sophomore Aubrey O'Gorman posted a match-high five blocks.
Eight different Spartans finished the match with at least one kill, including five from both freshmen Evie Doezema and Maradith O'Gorman. Iosia led Michigan State with a pair of aces, while sophomore Avery Horejsi and freshman Jayhlin Swain each had one. Bishop contributed a career-high four blocks.
Michigan State was out-hit .237 to .156 overall, but hit better than Penn State in set two hitting .222 to PSU's .179. The Spartans out-blocked the Nittany Lions 10-6, led by Aubrey O'Gorman's five. Sunday's match was a back-and-forth affair throughout with 24 tied scores and 10 lead changes. Three of the four sets had multiple lead changes. Michigan State hit .167 in transition and .147 on first ball attacks.
The Spartans kept things close in set one, trailing by just one (16-15) before Penn State went on a 9-2 run to take the set. Moore had six of her team-high 15 kills in set one. Michigan State trailed by as many as seven points to open set two, down 8-1 in the early stages, before storming back to steal the set. MSU ended the set on a 12-5 run to complete the comeback. Freshman Selin Aslayan had just two kills in set two, but both came late including the set clinching point.
Set three was another close one with Michigan State trailing by just one, 21-20, in the late stages. Penn State took the set on an MSU service error, one of 17 in the match for the Spartans who are experiencing some growing pains while adjusting some aspects of their service game. Michigan State kept things close early in set four, but Penn State used an 11-5 run to close out the set in their favor.
