Three Individual Champions Lead No. 24 Spartans to Team Title in Reno

RENO, Nev. – Led by a trio of individual champions, No. 24 Michigan State wrestling took home its first tournament title of the 2022-23 season, as the Spartans tallied 161 points to earn the team championship at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday at the Reno Events Center.
Redshirt junior Jordan Hamdan, junior Caleb Fish and graduate Cameron Caffey each collected individual championships at their respective weight classes, leading a 21-man Spartan squad to the top of the leaderboard in Reno. MSU's dominant fall semester came to a close with 10 different wrestlers earning podium finishes, highlighted by five finalists across five different weight classes. Michigan State took home its first tournament title since running away with the team championship at the 2021 Navy Classic a year ago. The Spartans booked their best finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions since placing second in the 2018-19 season.
Hamdan took home MSU's first individual crown of the day at 141 pounds, opening the tournament with a trio of decisions over Ben Murphy of Grand View, Luis Ramos of CSU Bakersfield and unattached competitor Brennan Van Hoecke. In his quarterfinal bout with Steven Kroesen of Vanguard, Hamdan tallied a 6-2 decision to advance, and ultimately dismantled semifinal foe Chayse Lajoie of Stanford In a 7-2 showing. Hamdan's streak of decisions culminated in one of his best tournaments since joining the Green & White, as the Hudson, Michigan, native defeated Oklahoma State's Andrew Bloemhof in a 3-2 match for the title.
Michigan State's successful afternoon in the Silver State continued at 165 pounds, as Fish rolled to his first tournament championship of the 2022-23 campaign. He opened action in the round of 32 against Grand View's Jack Ervien, booking a 6-0 decision before besting Clay Fielden of Indiana in a 6-1 match. Fish pinned Keller Rock of Embry-Riddle in two minutes and 32 seconds during his quarterfinal matchup just before downing Oklahoma State's Jalin Harper in a 6-2 decision in the semifinal round. The Eaton Rapids, Michigan, native Fish saved his best for last, hauling in MSU's second individual championship of the day in a 2:37 fall over Cole Moody of Wyoming.
A mainstay in the Spartan lineup over the past few seasons, Caffey added to his MSU resume on Sunday, as the 16th-ranked 197-pounder rolled past five opponents on the way to his first individual crown this season. Caffey dispatched with his first two opponents by fall, downing Ben Hughes of Southern Oregon in 2:20 before pinning Talmage Carman of Western Wyoming in 3:48. The Carbondale, Illinois, native logged an 18-2 technical fall over Carl Hansen of Montana Northern, following that performance with yet another first-period pin over Garavous Kouekabakilaho of Grand View in 2:08 of match time. In the 197-pound final, Caffey cruised past Indiana's No. 33 Nick Willham en route to a 12-3 major decision.
Michigan State saw widespread success across multiple weight classes on Sunday, with 32nd-ranked junior Tristan Lujan reaching the championship bout at 125 pounds and graduate heavyweight starter Ryan Vasbinder finishing second at 285. Redshirt senior Layne Malczewski booked a third-place finish at 184 pounds, his second podium finish of the season following an individual title at the Navy Classic. Graduate 125-pounder Benny Gomez, junior 157-pounder Chase Saldate and freshman 174-pounder Ceasar Garza each finished fourth in their respective weight classes, while freshman heavyweight Josh Terrill rounded out the Spartan placewinners with a fifth-place showing at 285.
On an individual basis, Hamdan continues to lead the Green & White in overall victories with an impressive 19-3 overall record on the year. Hamdan is off to one of the fastest starts in his career, maintaining a 14-3 record in tournament action in addition to an unblemished 5-0 dual record. Caffey's dominant showing in Reno vaulted him to 10 overall wins in 2022-23, while Fish improved to 13-2 in tournaments and 17-3 overall following his title-winning effort at 165.
