Behind Stephenson’s School Record, MSU Shines at Spartan Invitational

Trevor Stephenson breaks the school record in pole vault with a mark of 5.51m.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State track & field pole vaulter Trevor Stephenson's record setting performance, highlighted successful day the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational Saturday.
Despite inclement weather, the Spartans shined on both the track and the field. During the meet, MSU Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Lisa Breznau celebrated the Spartans' 12 seniors.
Stephenson highlighted the meet with a record-breaking vault of 5.51m, breaking Paul Terek's record of 5.50m set in 2002. Michael Davenport finished second with a best vault of 5.11m. In the women's pole vault, Sophia Mettes also took the gold medal with a personal best 4.05m. Stephenson also broke the indoor record with a vault of 5.66m earlier this year.
ON THE TRACK
The Michigan State women dominated the women's 1500m, going one through five, including Makeena Veen who was running unattached. Five Spartans registered personal bests in the race. Katelyn Stewart-Barnett took top honors with a time of 4:28.91 with Kaitlyn Hynes finishing second with a PR time of 4:30.82. Olivia Millen took third-place honors with a personal-best mark of 4:31.60. Alison Ziehl (4:31.67) and Taylor Visscher (4:32.69) also had PRs.
In the men's 1500m, Owen Huard finished second with a time of 3:51.48 while John Petruno (3:51.91) and Drew Seabase (3:52.59), took third and fourth respectively.
In the men's 800m, the Spartans had three in the top 10 of the 40-runner field, led by Petruno breaking the tape in 1:52.55. Hunter Zartman was fifth with 1:53.73, while Owen Huard was 10th in 1:55.03.
The women's 800m was Green & White galore, with the Spartans sweeping the top four spots and four of the top six spots. Lauren Freeland took top honors with a 2:07.89, followed by Katie Osika (2:08.04), Shae Harbaugh (2:08.98) and Abbey Carvey (2:09.86 - personal best).
Michigan State swept the men and women's 4x100m relay teams. The men's team of Logan Allen, Terrence Muex, Antonio Postell II and Ian Thompson won with a winning time of 41.77. The Spartan women's team of Shakira Dancy, Anyssa Hall, Alexys Wilson and Amani Nuels dialed up a winning time of 47.20.
MSU also swept both the men and women's hurdles events, as Heath Baldwin chopped down the clock to the time of 14.25 to win the 110 hurdles men's race. In the 100 women's races, Kaia Scheffler won with a time of 14.30.
MSU also swept the 400m hurdles, with Kendel Hammock winning the men's race clocking a 53.47, while Kaia Scheffler won the women's race in a 1:03.49 timing.
The 200m was another Spartan sweep, with Muex (21.45) and Postell (21.49) going 1-2 in the men's race, while Shakira Dancy won the women's race in a 23.96 time. Alexys Wilson (26.20) was fourth, while Melissa Avi was (26.62) nine as MSU went 1-4-9 in the event.
In the men's 400m, Noah Sage won with a winning time of 47.29, while Alex Yon was fourth with a time of 50.18. The women's 400m was not only won by a Spartan, but it was all Green & White as Shakira Dancy clocked a 55.63 to win it, while Nala Barlow was second with a 57.23 and Alexis Alston was third with a 59.34.
The final events of the meet was the meet were the men and women's 4x400m relays. The men's team of Hammock, Muex, Noah Sage and Alex Yon crossed the line first with a time of 3:22.72. The women's squad of Barlow, Lexy Alston, Alexys Wilson and Dancy were also first with a time of 3:49.86.
FIELD EVENTS
Colby Morlock won the men's shot put with a winning distance of 18.07m, coming on his second-to-last throw.
Valadian Pallett won the women's hammer throw with a 53.39m, while teammate Elle Adrian was fifth with a 47.97m distance. The Spartans went 2-4-5 in the men's hammer throw, with Joshua Devries (64.29m) posting second, while Colby Morlock (57.02m) was fourth and Brendan Vandermeer (51.70m) in fifth.
The Green & White went 1-2 in the women's shot put, as Opal Jackson won with a distance of 13.82m, while teammate Valadian Pallett was second with a 13.19m mark.
Olivia Lopez won the women's long jump with a best jump of 5.83m.
Tylor Leedom (1.99m) and Brady Schultz (1.99m) went first and second, respectively in the men's high jump. Schult matched his career best in the meet. On the women's side Elizabeth Knoll was first (1.69m), while Autumn Glover was fourth (1.64m) and Korin Whitcomb was seventh (1.59m).
The Spartans are back in action April 7-8 at the Duke Invitational in the Durham, North Carolina.
