Spartan Volleyball Triumphs At Indiana, 3-1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Kim Schram had 25 kills to lead Michigan State volleyball to a 3-1 win at Indiana (30-26, 30-23, 25-30, 30-22) in Bloomington, Ind., Saturday. The Spartans improve to 10-12 overall and 5-9 in the Big Ten, while Indiana drops to 8-17 overall and 2-12 in league play. The win marks MSU's first Big Ten road victory of the season.
Schram had six digs and four blocks to go along with her 25 kills. Freshman Katie Johnson had 12 kills of her own, as well as three digs and three blocks, while classmate Maggie Griffin posted 50 assists. Griffin also had 13 digs in the match for the Spartans. Middles Brooke Langston and Andrea Hansen had seven and five kills, respectively. Libero Marley Bellwood posted 20 digs, marking her fifth consecutive match with at least 15 digs. Freshman Meghan Schoen hit .353 and had eight kills and four blocks. The Spartans posted an attack percentage of .301 on the night, and Indiana hit .213 in the match.
State led throughout most of the first game, before the Spartans pulled out the 30-26 win. Schram led State with 10 kills on .500 hitting (10K-3E-14TA), while Langston added five kills on .556 hitting (5K-0E-9TA). Langston also had a block solo and a block assist in the game. Griffin had 15 assists, and Bellwood contributed five digs in the game. State hit .375 (21K-6E-40TA) and held IU to a .235 (14K-6E-34TA) attack percentage.
The second game was close until MSU pulled out to a 23-15 lead. IU closed the State lead to five (25-20) before MSU took the game and the 2-0 lead in the match, 30-23. Johnson had four kills for the Spartans, while Schram had two and a block solo. Kopka had four kills in the second game, to go along with three digs. Schoen and Schram each recorded a block solo, while Griffin had 11 assists and six digs. Bellwood added seven digs in the third game. Both teams struggled at the service line - MSU had five service errors and Indiana had seven. State hit .219 in the game, while the Hoosiers had an attack percentage of .125.
Indiana took control of the third game early, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. State fought back, but could get no closer than 29-25, and the Hoosiers rolled to a 30-25 win. State hit just .109 with 13 kills and eight errors on 46 attacks in the game. Schram had a team-best five kills, and Schoen, Kopka and Johnson each added two. Griffin contributed eight assists, while Bellwood had seven digs. Andrea Hansen saw her first action for the Spartans since Oct. 9, and had two block assists in the game. IU had three service aces in the game.
A five-point service run from Griffin gave State an 8-5 lead to start the fourth game. The Spartans did not tral from that point, and went on to take the match with a 30-22 fourth-game victory. Schram and Hansen had five kills apiece in the game, while Johnson had four of her own. Griffin contributed 15 assists in the fourth game. State hit a blistering .643 in the final game, with 23 kills and four errors on 35 attacks. IU hit .289 in the final game of the four-game set, with 16 kills and five errors on 38 attacks.
MSU returns home Friday, Nov. 12 for a 7 p.m. match against Iowa, and then hosts No. 5 Minnesota Saturday, Nov. 13 at 8 p.m. All home Michigan State matches are played in Jenison Field House on the Michigan State campus.
