Track & Field Posts Several Personal Bests at Windy City Invitational

CHICAGO - Highlighted by four podium finishes and a win in the 400m for Noah Sage, Michigan State track & field posted a number of personal best performances at Wisconsin's Windy City Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Gately Stadium in Chicago.
"We had some great performances this weekend as well as steady progression," said MSU Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Lisa Breznau.Â
DISTANCE
The Spartans kicked off the weekend Friday afternoon in the men's 5000m, led by junior Andrew Lane in a trio of impressive performances. Lane ran 14:16.08 in his first collegiate 5000m for fourth place, followed closely by graduate student CarLee Stimpfel in 14:18.42. Senior Aden Smith clocked 14:19.75 for seventh place, which was a personal best by over a minute.
A pair of Spartans in the invitational miles wrapped up the action on the distance side for MSU Friday night. In the women's race, fifth-year senior Katie Osika earned runner-up honors in a personal-best 4:37.51, while graduate student John Petruno narrowly missed breaking the four-minute barrier in the men's mile with a sixth-place 4:01.17 performance. Former Spartan Morgan Beadlescomb won the race in 3:55.58. Also in the women's race, senior Lauren Freeland ran 4:42.55 and sophomore Kate-Stewart Barnett ran 4:43.40.
On Saturday, four Spartans notched sub-10 performances in the women's 3000m. Junior Makenna Veen placed ninth in the invitational section with a personal-best time of 9:25.39. Junior Eleanor Kendell ran 9:52.11 for 13th in the unseeded section, followed by sophomore Olivia Millen in 9:57.82 and junior Madelynn Bean in 9:59.25. In the men's 3000m, junior Owen Huard ran a personal best of 8:04.70 to place eighth.
The unseeded sections of the mile also took place Saturday. Senior Alison Ziehl ran a personal best of 4:50.34 for seventh place on the women's side, while junior Jeremy Kloss finished eighth in a personal-best 4:07.23 on the men's side. Junior Alexander Penski broke 4:10 in the event for the first time with a personal best of 4:08.92.
In the women's 800m, junior Abbey Carvey ran 2:08.89, a personal best, for fifth place, and senior Judith Rector ran a personal-best 2:09.39 for seventh.
SPRINTS/HURDLES
Senior Heath Baldwin qualified for the finals of the men's 60m hurdles on Friday, running a personal best of 8.00 in both the prelims and finals. He finished fourth in the finals. Senior Antonio Postell ran 6.86 to place 10th in the 60m prelims. In the long sprints, Sage won the invitational section of the 400m with a time of 47.70. Junior Terrence Muex followed in fifth place, running 48.52.
Graduate student Nala Barlow led the Spartans in the women's sprints, running 56.25 in the 400m for ninth. In the 60m, senior Amani Nuels ran 7.52, and graduate student Shakira Dancy ran 24.32 in the 200m on Saturday to place 11th.
The Spartans wrapped up action on Saturday in the men's 4x400, where MSU's team of Sage, Muex, Jalen Smith and Kendel Hammock placed third with a time of 3:14.24.
JUMPS
A trio of Spartans performed well in the long jump Friday, led by sophomore Dylan Terryberry who posted a mark of 6.80m for 10th place. Sophomore Jalen Nelson jumped 6.60m, and senior Ryan Talbot posted a jump of 6.44m.
On Saturday, fifth-year senior Trevor Stephenson continued his impressive season in the pole vault, finishing second in the invitational section with a clearance of 5.48m. Teammate Michael Davenport cleared 4.98m for eighth place.
In the women's jumps, fifth-year senior Olivia Lopez placed ninth with a season-best 5.64m mark in the long jump. Freshman Sophia Mettes placed fourth in the invitational pole vault with a clearance of 4.07m, while sophomore Breanne Black cleared a personal-best 3.82m in the unseeded section for third place.
THROWS
Sophomore Opal Jackson placed sixth in the women's shot put with a mark of 15.83m, which tied her personal best. In the men's shot put, freshman Colby Morlock threw a personal-best 17.40m for fifth place. Junior Joshua Devries placed ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 18.10m, while Morlock threw a personal-best 17.87m for 11th.
UP NEXT
MSU will participate in another weekend doubleheader, competing in the Silverston Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on Friday, Feb. 17 before heading to South Bend, Indiana, to participate in the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 18 in what will be the final tune-up before the Big Ten Indoor Championships taking place on Feb. 24-25 in Geneva, Ohio.
