Volleyball Hosts Iowa, No. 20 Indiana This Weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â Michigan State volleyball (12-2, 2-2 B1G) begins a four-match home stand this week, hosting Iowa (10-6, 1-3 B1G) on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and No. 20 Indiana (13-1, 4-0 B1G) on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. inside the Breslin Center.
Both matches will stream on B1G+. Fans can tune into John Kreger's call of the action on MSUSpartans.com or via the Michigan State Athletics app for both matches.
Friday's match against the Hawkeyes will be the second of five Big Ten | Discover Volleyball Challenge matches for MSU. Select conference matches played during the month of October will count toward the inaugural Discover In-Season Volleyball Challenge. Each team will play five designated challenge matches throughout the month, with the winner determined by the highest win total across the five games. MSU is 1-0 in Discover Challenge matches so far, defeating Northwestern on the road, 3-1, on Oct. 3, and will host Nebraska on Friday, Oct. 17 for its third match in the challenge.
MSU went 1-1 last week in Big Ten action on the road, knocking off Northwestern in four sets on Oct. 3 in Evanston before battling in a five-set loss at Illinois on Oct. 5. The Spartans hit .215 over last week's matches and posted a conference-best 16 service aces, averaging 1.78 aces per set.Â
Outside hitter Bianca Mumcular led the Spartans in total kills last week, totaling 31 with a career-high and team-leading 16 against Northwestern and 15 against Illinois. The freshman has had five double-digit kill outings this season, all coming in MSU's last six matches. Junior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska tallied a team-high 17 kills against Illinois for her eighth match of the season with double-digit kills. She also hit a season-best .406 clip at Illinois (17-4-32).Â
Redshirt freshman Malayah Long recorded her sixth double-double (assists-digs) of the season at Illinois, Â posting team-highs in assists (47) and digs (13). Junior libero Lia Schneider totaled and team and season-high 16 digs at Northwestern.Â
MSU had six different players record at least one service ace at Illinois. Junior defensive specialist Ky Clayton, who made her first career start against the Illini, posted a team-high three alongside Staniszewska, while Mumcular, Long, middle blocker Zuzanna Kulig and defensive specialist Mya Bolton each added one.
ABOUT IOWA
Iowa is 10-6 overall this season and 1-3 in the B1G, having dropped its last three matches after opening conference play with a home sweep over Maryland. The Hawkeyes fell at Oregon (3-2) and Washington (3-0) last week.
The Spartans lead the all-time series, 55-29, including a 24-15 advantage in East Lansing. MSU has won its last three contests against Iowa and last dropped a match in the series in a five-setter on Nov. 26, 2022 at home. MSU earned 3-0 sweeps against Iowa both home and away last season.
The Hawkeyes are the second of three two-play conference opponents for the Spartans this season. MSU will travel to Coralville to play the Hakweyes on the road later this month on Oct. 24.Â
Head coach Jim Barnes is in fourth season at Iowa.

Indiana is 13-1 this season and a perfect 4-0 in the B1G after road wins over ranked USC and UCLA squads last week. The Hoosiers came in at No. 20 in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll, their highest ranking in program history and first since 2010. The Hoosiers' 4-0 start to conference play is their best start since 1985.
MSU is 53-36 all-time against Indiana and 29-9 in East Lansing, but has not won a contest in the series since a 3-1 home win on Nov. 30, 2019. The two schools last met in a 3-1 IU victory in Bloomington on Oct. 4 last season.
Steve Aird is in his eighth season as head coach in 2025.
